Event and Fundraiser Celebrates Third Anniversary of the Child-Parent Security Act in New York

NEW YORK – February 8, 2024 — Alexis L. Cirel and the Fertility Law Group of Warshaw Burstein LLP hosted FERTILITY STATE OF MIND, an evening event and fundraiser celebrating three years of legalized surrogacy in New York, at Valbella at The Park in midtown Manhattan.

With entertainment from DJ Hesta Prynn, hors d’oeuvres and flowing cocktails with names like the “Surrogacy Spritz” and “Fertilitini,” a group of over one hundred “who’s who” industry professionals posed in small groups in an elaborate “selfie booth” featuring a lighted skyline of New York, bid on a silent auction items including tickets to the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and enjoyed a dramatic live performance of New York State of Mind performed by Broadway’s own, Steven Thomas.

Assembly Member Amy Paulin and Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who co-sponsored the Child-Parent Security Act, each sent a video message that was played for the group.

The festive event also raised funds for several non-profit organizations including The Chick Mission, Stardust Foundation, Baby Quest Foundation, and A Damn Good Life, whose missions all include helping to offset the considerable costs of fertility treatments as the community works toward making this path to family building more accessible.

Along with hosts Alexis L. Cirel and Warshaw Burstein LLP, sponsors included: Stephanie Levich of Family Match Consulting, Andrea Bryman of Thallo Health, and Lauren Berson of Conceive.

Ms. Cirel, with partner Eric I. Wrubel, is the founder of Warshaw Burstein’s Fertility Law Group, a first-of-its-kind in New York offering “one-stop-shopping” for legal counsel for individuals and families pursuing assisted reproduction.

The Child-Parent Security Act (CPSA) legalized compensated gestational surrogacy in New York and ensures protections for all New York families formed through assisted reproduction. The new law also set the gold standard nationally for the protection of surrogates, requiring that all surrogacy contracts include a comprehensive and protective “Surrogate’s Bill of Rights.” Ms. Cirel was appointed by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to his Campaign Leadership Committee to pass the CPSA. Before the passage of this law, New York was one of three states in the country in which compensated gestational surrogacy was illegal.
